Jack Kuper, born Jankel Kuperblum in 1932, spent part of his childhood on the run through war-torn Poland.
At age 15, he was brought to Canada as one of a thousand war orphans sponsored by the Canadian Jewish community. He enrolled at Central Tech to study commercial art. Upon graduation, he was offered a job at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). His graphic work has been featured in prestigious international publications and recently, the Ontario Art Gallery acquired thirty-two for its permanent collection.
He also wrote and directed many plays for Canadian television. Sun in my Eyes was one of the first broadcasts to deal with the Holocaust.
In 1967 Kuper’s classic biography, Child of the Holocaust was published and translated into eight languages. The sequel, the prize-winning After the Smoke Cleared appeared in 1994.
In 1971, Jack established a film company: Kuper Productions Ltd., and produced and directed commercials and documentary films, for which he won awards in Canada, including two Geminis, the US and the Venice Film Festival. A Day in the Warsaw Ghetto: A Birthday Trip in Hell, was broadcast the world over.
